Commodore's Supper
Saturday 8 March 2025
The Fastnet Race of 1979 will long be remembered as one of the greatest peacetime maritime disasters of the 20th century. Fifteen sailors died and five boats were lost when a violent storm devastated the racing fleet in the Western Approaches and the Irish Sea.
Matt Power and his sister Frances Reincke describe their ordeal of surviving the 1979 Fastnet Race on board a 36ft class three yacht. Aged 19 and 21 respectively at the time, they were rescued by the RNLI Dunmore East lifeboat and consider themselves lucky to be alive.
